Time Magazine's Big Child Breastfeeding Bashing - or "Look How Far We've Come!"

This is what many are saying is a deliberately provocative photograph, used for the cover of Time magazine.

It shows Jamie Lynne Grumet, from Los Angeles, breastfeeding her three-year-old son, Aram.

50/50

One of my gorgeous ladies called me the other day.  She'd been having problems with sore nipples.

It turns out her daughter not only had a tongue tie, but also had a bubble palate.  Despite all of this, she managed to get more than enough milk to keep midwives and health visitors happy.  Mum is producing copious amounts of milk.  Once all of this had been sorted, my lovely lady took her daughter to be weighed.  When she called me to update me she told me which percentile her daughter was on.

Language & the Breastfeeding Debate

The language we currently use to talk about breastfeeding...

..is entrenched, with guilt, grief and resentment lurking beneath the surface like jagged, hull-tearing rocks. These raw emotions make it incredibly hard to sail a clear, helpful, kind journey through the debate. But it is so important to get it right. Why? Because guilt, grief and resentment aren’t words we want to use to encapsulate our early experiences of motherhood and parenting.

A Tale of Two Births

I adore twin births.  I admit to bias as a twin mum myself...

My own twins were a transverse lie, so the vaginal option was out for me, and I take joy when I see other twin mums get the birth that I didn't.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing

Real nappy users have a secret.  They like to keep it quiet but I’m going to share it with you...

Most real nappy users also use disposables some of the time.  In fact, many real nappy users use a disposable at night.  Especially around 6 months, when babies are about to be weaned and they are on a liquid diet.  They tend to drink a lot and that means they pee a lot.  So, real nappy users - not being quite the martyrs they’re supposed to be - use a disposable because cloth just isn’t up to the job.

Say It With a Card: Congratulations on Your New Baby! [Breastfeeding? What's That?]

My twins’ nursery keyworker left for her maternity leave a week or so ago.

I suppose in the interests of full disclosure, this is the part where I should point out that my twins are four, and I haven’t breastfed them for some time.  I’m certain that their keyworker never did, either.  So, how does this (fascinating, I’m sure) little tale have anything to do with breastfeeding?

Ask Me About Breastfeeding Twins (Part 2)

On becoming pregnant with twins, women are told of the dangers of the babies coming early

Breastfeeding Past The Age Of One

Can it be done? Should it be done? Haven't they got TEETH?

They are just some of the things that you'll hear if you breastfeed a baby past the age of one.

Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Pregnancy and Birth outcomes

Swansea University Research Study: Complementary and alternative therapies during pregnancy and birth and postnatal outcomes

We are looking for mums with a baby aged 0 – 6 months old to complete a questionnaire exploring their use of complementary and alternative therapies during pregnancy and possible associations with birth and postnatal outcomes. For example we would like to compare experiences for mothers who did or did not use treatments such as osteopathy, reflexology and homeopathy during pregnancy.
